Saturday, September 19, 2009 By Skip Vaughn For The Times skip.vaughn@htimes.com HARVEST - Buckhorn High faced fourth-and-one from its own 22 in the closing seconds of the third quarter Friday night against Sparkman. Most football teams would have punted. But most football teams don't have a Marquis Smith in their backfield. Smith took the handoff and ran six yards for a first down. The senior running back finished with 165 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries as the Bucks beat rival Sparkman 31-21. "Tonight I've really got to give it to my offensive line," Smith said. "They opened up a lot of holes and blocked really well." "I believe our guys won this game because of the way they worked Sunday through Wednesday with great effort," Bucks coach Michael Jackson said. "I'm very proud of the seniors." Smith scored on runs of 1 and 17 yards. The Bucks (2-2, 2-2 in Class 6A, Region 8) finished with 392 total yards, 263 of them coming on the ground. Senior quarterback Matt Broady completed 11-of-18 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown. Nick Luna made all four of his extra points as well as a 25-yard field goal. Sparkman's Laquince Love had 12 carries for 65 yards and three touchdowns for Sparkman (0-4, 0-3). Buckhorn opened the scoring at 4:39 in the first quarter on Smith's 1-yarder, capping an 11-play, 60-yard drive. The Senators answered with 19.2 seconds left in the quarter on Love's 7-yard run, followed by Brandon Hayden's extra point. That ended an 11-play, 70-yard drive. Luna kicked his field goal for the Bucks at 7:58 in the second quarter. Broady threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Trey Anderson in the closing seconds and the Bucks led 17-7 at halftime. Smith scored on his 17-yarder at 4:38 in the third quarter, capping a four-play, 55-yard drive for a 24-7 lead. Sparkman answered with Love's 11-yard run at 2:31 to culminate a six-play, 65-yard drive. Rodrick Anderson scored on a 1-yard run for the Bucks at 7:27 in the fourth quarter for a 31-14 cushion. Love scored on a 1-yarder for the Senators with 4:39 left to end the scoring. Edited removed Haynes comments. September 19, 2009 0 comment(s)

Friday, September 18, 2009 By Reggie Benson Times Sports Staff reggie.benson@htimes.com Garrott excited about playing in front of A&M crowd JACKSONVILLE - Big. Fast. Violent. Those are the words Jacksonville State coach Jack Crowe used to describe redshirt sophomore outside linebacker Rodney Garrott. A former Sparkman High star, Garrott will be celebrating a homecoming of sorts Saturday when the Gamecocks (0-2) visit Alabama A&M (2-0) at Louis Crews Stadium. Kickoff is 6 p.m. "I'm excited," Garrott said Wednesday afternoon before practice. "I get a chance to show my high school coaches, teachers and friends how far I've come athletically and as a young man. I'm excited about getting on the field and showing them what I've got." Crowe already knows what Garrott's got. All the Gamecocks have to do, he says, is bring it out of him."Rodney is on the verge of being really, really special," he said. "He's an emerging player, and I have tremendous expectations for him. He's a big, fast, violent football player." Garrott was that way in 2006 when he finished with 90 tackles and two interceptions in helping Sparkman to a 10-2 record. After redshirting as a Jacksonville State freshman in 2007, he played sparingly last season. The 6-foot-1, 255-pounder made his first career start in last week's 19-9 loss to Florida State. He was credited with one tackle. "That was a big moment in my career," Garrott said of his first start. "Florida State is a legendary school. It was big to play against them and to do as well as we did." The Gamecocks led 9-7 before the Seminoles scored 12 points in the final 35 seconds to eke out the win. "We were right there with them," Garrott said. "We lost, but it should give us some confidence the rest of the season." After playing outside linebacker his first season, Garrott was moved to defensive end a year ago. This season, he's playing Rover - which is a cross between an outside linebacker and a defensive end - and he's loving it."I get a chance to rush the passer and get back in coverage," he said. Garrott said A&M recognized those skills, but by the time the Bulldogs began recruiting him, he had already committed to play for the Gamecocks. "I didn't know enough about A&M, and I wasn't really interested in finding out too much about them because I was getting close to making my decision," he said. "I fell in love with my teammates and (defensive coordinator) Coach (Greg) Stewart. He played a big part in me coming here. I liked him as a person and a coach." Stewart likes Garrott, too. "When the ball is snapped, he's wide open," Stewart said. "He might not always be right, but he plays with a great motor. His future is very bright. He's just got to mature a little bit. We're fortunate to have him because he's not only a good player, but he's a good kid." After falling to Georgia Tech and Florida State, Garrott said the Gamecocks are in desperate need of a win. "We'll be ready to play," he said. "We're thirsty for a win." September 19, 2009 0 comment(s) | ||||||||||||
