Spain Park Recap and Stats

Spain Park rains down on Sparkman

HARVEST - It was early in the second quarter and a chance for Sparkman to seize some momentum against Birmingham-area power Spain Park.Sparkman's Alex Holmes had just intercepted a deflected pass from highly regarded junior quarterback Neil Caudle at the Spain Park 13.Two plays later Whitney McKinney went in from the 2-yard line, but Carlos Anderson blocked Trent Bissell's extra point attempt that would have tied the score. On the play following the ensuing kickoff, Caudle broke an option keeper for a 71-yard touchdown, and Spain Park (3-1) was the team clearly in control.Caudle also passed for two touchdowns, and the Jaguars claimed a convincing 37-14 victory on Friday night.Facing a stronger defensive line, Sparkman (2-2) was outgained 469 yards to 205.On top of everything else, McKinney suffered either a dislocated or broken finger on his non-throwing hand."It looks pretty bad," Sparkman coach Roger Haynes said. "It was hard for him to take snaps."That wasn't the only part of the night at Senators Stadium that disappointed Haynes."We didn't have effort up front on our rush," he said. "We were not mentally, physically or emotionally ready, but give Spain Park credit. They made the plays."The Jaguars scored first when E.J. Riggins ran 34 yards with 15 seconds left in the first quarter.Ashish Patel kicked the first of four extra points.Sparkman drew within a point with 8:10 remaining in the half, only to see Caudle give Spain Park clear control with his run 17 seconds later. The Jaguars made it 21-6 before halftime when Caudle hit Austin Graham with a 31-yard scoring pass.Caudle connected with Riggins on a 57-yard touchdown pass a minute into the third quarter.A 28-yard field goal by Patel made it 31-6 with 9:40 remaining.Sparkman then drove 80 yards in 11 plays. Dezmond Richardson scored from the 7 and then ran for two points to make it 31-14.An 18-yard run by Harold Willis finished the scoring for Spain Park with 2:55 left.Sparkman hosts Grissom for homecoming on Friday.
