Coach : Roger Haynes

Position : Head Coach
Defensive Coordinator / Linebackers Strength and Conditioning

Record : 16-13 in 3 years (.551)
Roger Haynes is in his third year as head football
coach at Sparkman High School . He was hired in January
2003 to lead the Senators' football program following four
seasons as the defensive coordinator at Tuscaloosa
County High School . Haynes also served as an assistant
coach at North Jackson High School , Section High School and
Vinemont High School .
He played baseball at Jacksonville State University under
legendary coach Rudy Abbott, and spent his first two years of
collegiate baseball at Roane State Junior College in
Harriman, Tenn.
Coach Haynes was a three-sport athlete at Section High
School, lettering in baseball, basketball and football. He was a quarterback and free safety for the school's football team. His hobbies include water sports and golf. He is married to the former Ms.Lorri Stewart, counselor Sparkman High School . He has 3 children daughter Kristen 15, son Locklin 6, and daughter Sara Kathryn 3 months.
 

 

 

Coach : Mark Smothers

Position : Assistant Head Coach
Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks

Mark Smothers has 31 years of coaching experience.
He is currently serving as Offensive Coordinator
and Quarterbacks Coach for the Senators. He has been
a head football coach at three Alabama high schools
Hanceville for 8 years, Vinemont for 12 years, and
Section for 4 years. He coached current head coach
Roger Haynes while at Section. Coach Smothers
also served as Offensive Coordinator for Austin High
School in Decatur and was secondary coach at Guntersville.

He is a graduate of Addison High School , and
played one year of football and one year of baseball at
Florence State University (now the University of
North Alabama ). Coach Smothers earned his
bachelor's degree and a master's degree from the
University of Alabama . His wife, Dianne, retired last year as an
elementary school teacher. They have two daughters and
four grandchildren.

 

 

Coach : David Smothers

Position : Wide Receivers
Special Teams Coordinator

David Smothers has eight years of coaching experience,
and will be responsible for coaching the Senators' receivers in addition to serving as special teams' coordinator.
He was the head football coach at Hanceville Middle School
for three years, and was the defensive coordinator at
Hanceville High School for three years before joining
Sparkman's football program. Coach Smothers is a graduate
of Addison High School , and earned a bachelor's degree
from Athens State University , and a master's degree from
Alabama A&M University

He comes from a family of teachers and coaches. His
mother was an elementary school teacher for 15 years,
and his father is retired after teaching and coaching at
Addison for 30 years, and he has two uncles and a
brother who coach at the high school level. He and his wife,
Lesley, have two sons Sage 19 months, and Rylan 6 months.

 

 

Coach : Scott McMickin

Position : Offensive Line / Tight Ends

Scott McMickin is in his third year as the offensive line
coach at Sparkman He joined the Sparkman coaching staff with Head Coach Roger Haynes coming from Tuscaloosa County High School where he was the offensive line coach for four years. Prior to his stint at Tuscaloosa County , McMickin attended and graduated from the University of Alabama and was a coaching assistant for four years, including two years with Neil Calloway. McMickin was a three-year letterman in football at Hamilton High School . McMickin is currently serving as the head of the science department here at Sparkman.
 

 

Coach : Chris Weeks

Position : Running Backs Coach

Chris Weeks is in his second year serving as Sparkman's running backs coach after serving as the Senators' freshman coach in 2003. Chris was the head football coach at Monrovia Middle School before joining the Sparkman staff where he compiled a record of 28-4.He also served as the head football coach at Sheffield Junior High School for one season where his team finished 7-1.

He is a graduate of Lexington High School and played baseball at Northwest Junior College for two years. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama , and has earned a master's degree from the University of North Alabama . Chris and his wife Candice have two sons Dylan and Drew.

 

 

 

Coach : Jonathan Snider

Position : Defensive Line Coach/ Pride

Jonathan Snider begins his third year with Sparkman's football program. Snider will be responsible for the defensive line after serving the previous two years as defensive coordinator for Sparkman's freshman football team. Prior to joining the Senators, he served two years as a
student coach at Tuscaloosa County High School with Roger
Haynes. The Muscle Shoals High School graduate
earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Alabama . He teaches 12th grade government/economics and 11 th grade U.S. history. He will also serve as
assistant varsity softball coach. Snider is engaged to be married to Ms.Heather Haney of Ardmore .

 

 

Coach : Kerry McDowell

Position : Secondary Coach (Safeties)

Kerry McDowell is in his first year with the Sparkman football program. He will be responsible for the coaching the defensive secondary exclusively the Safeties. He has 9 years of previous experience. He coached six years at Lawrence County and three at East Lawrence high school.

Coach McDowell is a graduate of Boyd- Buchanan High School in Chattanooga , Tenn. He earned his bachelor's degree from Auburn University and a Master's degree from Alabama A&M. He and his wife of 12 years Wendy Thrasher McDowell have two children, Libby 7, and John 4.

 

 

Coach : Randall Martin

Position : Secondary Coach (Cornerbacks)

Randall Martin is new to the Sparkman Football program this season after previously serving as freshman girl's basketball coach. Coach Martin will be responsible for coaching the defensive secondary exclusively the cornerbacks.

Martin is a graduate of Rogers High School . He attended and received his bachelor's degree in Physical Education from the University of North Alabama . While at UNA he played two years of football. This is his second year at Sparkman High School .

 

 

Coach : Kyle Smith

Position : Assistant to the Head Coach

Kyle Smith is new to the Sparkman Coaching staff but no stranger to Sparkman Football. A 2004 graduate of Sparkman High School , He has been involved with the football program since 2002. He will be serving as an assistant to the head coach and his responsibilities include statistical analysis, media relations coordinator, and day to day technical operations of the program. Kyle is currently attending Alabama A&M University pursuing his bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. He also operates the website for the Sparkman Football Program.

 

Coach : Roger Hillis

Position : Head Equipment Manager

Roger Hillis spends his spare time serving as equipment manager for Sparkman's football team. Mr. Hillis played and coached football at Marshall University and then became a high school football coach. At some point in his career, he has coached at nearly every school in Madison County . He was a coach at Buckhorn, New Hope , Hazel Green, and Sparkman. He is now retired from coaching and today he serves as an academic advisement counselor at Sparkman High School .
