GAME STORY

36 - 50

WK 1 (at Clay Chalkville) L 36-50
Sparkman can't stop Clay-Chalkville; fall hard 36-50

CLAY - If only the game could have ended at halftime.
Sparkman coach Roger Haynes certainly had to be thinking what might have been on Friday night. Touchdowns by Bryant Williams and Rob Weaver wiped out a 12-point Clay-Chalkville lead and put the Senators ahead by a point. Unfortunately for Haynes and Sparkman, the game lasted two more quarters. On top of that, there was a 1-hour, 34-minute rain and lightning delay midway through the third quarter. The last 10 minutes belonged to Clay-Chalkville, which scored two touchdowns to break a tie. The Senators ran just two plays in that time frame. Clay-Chalkville came away with a 50-36 victory in the opener for both teams. "Our defense was the worst in my 19 years (as a coach)," Haynes said. "They just quit." Haynes was much more positive about the offense."I was really pleased with the offense and their effort, and how they kept coming back," Haynes said. "We could have had three more scores in the first half." Clay-Chalkville coach Brent Smith said it was similar to the team's meeting at Sparkman last year, which the Senators won 36-29."It was ugly," Smith said. "Neither side could stop the other."
Sparkman quarterback Rob Weaver ran option keeper and broke it for a 68-yard touchdown on the game's first play. The point after failed, and Clay took a 7-6 lead after a quarter on a 20-yard Boris Watkins run and Chris Zender's extra point. In the second quarter, Corey Horton took a 9-yard scoring pass from Jesse Carroll. He later scored on a 1-yard run, and Sparkman's Michael Kitchens kicked a 37-yard field goal. With Clay up 21-9, Williams returned a kickoff 88 yards and Weaver scored from the 1 as the Senators took a 22-21 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, D.J. Vinson broke several tackles on a 49-yard scoring run for Clay, and Carroll bolted 94 yards for another score. Williams went in from the 3 for Sparkman, and after three quarters Clay led 36-29. Weaver passed 13 yards to Keegan Merrigan and Sparkman forged a 36-all tie with 10:12 to go. But Horton put Clay ahead to stay with 4:36 to play, and when Sparkman fumbled the ensuing kickoff, the Cougars took advantage to gain an insurance TD. Will White scored from the 20 with 1:32 to go to cap the scoring. The Senators had several positives on the night in the loss as they sustained no penalties and held the field position battle for much of the night unfortunately the Senators were unable to stop the Clay Chalkville rushing attack that gained 495 yards on the ground.
