Archrival Bob Jones routs Senators 48-17HARVEST – Bob Jones High wide receiver Collins Moore did more than enough in the first half against Sparkman on Friday night. He caught four passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns before watching the second half from the sidelines. His TDs covered 73, 1 and 42 yards. The Class 6A fourth-ranked Patriots went on to beat Sparkman 48-17 on Senior Night at a packed Senator Stadium. Bob Jones improved to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in Region 8 and will host Decatur next week for the region championship. “It was a good night, big rivalry game,” said Moore, a senior who has committed to Ole Miss. “We had to show the rest of the state that we can put points on the board.” Bob Jones did most of their production through the air with 286 passing yards. Zach Freeman completed 13-of-16 passes for 161 yards and three touchdowns. Jeffrey Moss went 5-for-7 for 125 yards and two touchdowns. “We have a strong wide receiving corps and two quarterbacks with great arms,” said Moore, who is 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds. A Bob Jones fumble on the opening possession led to a 34-yard field goal by Sparkman’s Billy Whyte at 6:54. But the Patriots answered on the final play of the first quarter with Moss’ 73-yard bomb to Moore, who caught the ball at midfield and raced to the end zone. Freeman connected with Moore for two scores in the second quarter. Trai Ragland added a 1-yard run and the Patriots led 28-3 at halftime. In the third quarter, Bob Jones scored on Freeman’s 11-yard pass to Xavier Gaddy, Braden Hager’s 41-yard field goal and Moss’ 27-yard pass to Kevin Wright. Hager added a 20-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and made all six extra points. Sparkman (2-6, 2-4) got two touchdown passes from Grant Banks to Marcus Williams of 3 and 16 yards in the fourth quarter. The Senators finished with 231 total yards to Bob Jones’ 387. “I thought we played outstanding defensively,” Bob Jones coach Kevin Rose said. “We really only gave up three points. That’s when we gave up the short field on a turnover (leading to Sparkman’s field goal). Other than that we didn’t give up a point the whole night until we subbed.” Williams finished with three catches for 32 yards and two touchdowns for the Senators. “They played a little harder than we did first half,” Williams said. “We prepared for them. They executed better than we did. They just played harder.”

Wednesday, February 03, 2010 By Reggie Benson Times Sports Staff reggie.benson@htimes.com Sparkman High quarterback to sign with Bulldogs Initially, Terrance Pride wasn't a big fan of running or lifting weights. In fact, when he transferred to Sparkman High from Butler two years ago, Pride told Senators football coach Roger Haynes that they did too much of that. "At Butler, we didn't really do anything," Pride said Tuesday afternoon before working out in the Senators' weight room. "The summer before I left, I would go work out and there would be just a couple of us. We didn't have to do a whole lot of running or lifting."After a few months at Sparkman, Haynes said Pride started buying into the program. "It took him about six to eight months, but after that, he was one of the leaders in the weight room," Haynes said. "I kept trying to explain to him that (running and lifting) was going to be the difference in him signing and not signing at the next level. It was amazing to me to see that transformation where the weight room became his friend instead of his enemy." Pride saw the light and as a result, he will sign with Alabama A&M today. "I figured it would help me when I went to college," said Pride, who picked A&M over Tennessee-Martin, Murray State and Alabama State. "Coach Haynes helped set me straight on the importance of running and lifting and I appreciate that." February 16, 2010 3 comment(s) | |||||||||||
